About the service

Q: What is 3jam SuperText?

3jam SuperText is a legacy product from 3jam focused on text messaging. You can send and receive messages in real time on our website, to all carriers in 180 countries in the world. The first 40 messages each month are free to send and receive on the website in the US. Best of all, 3jam SuperText automatically sends the message to the website when you’re at your computer or to your phone if you’re not. You can then reply to that message to keep the conversation going while you’re out and about.

Abuse Handling

Q: How do I block a user from sending me unwanted messages?

If you would like to block someone from contacting you, simply reply with the word BLOCK to the conversation and the initiator will no longer be able to send you messages. To unblock this user, simply reply UNBLOCK to the same conversation.

Sending and Receiving messages

Q: How do I send a message from the website?

Sending is easy. From your Inbox, click on New Message, select your recipients from your contact list, and press Send. Or you can reply to an existing conversation that you have going with that person or group from the Inbox.

Q: How do I send a message from my phone?

You have two ways to send a message using 3jam SuperText on your phone.

The easiest way is to reply to an existing conversation. If you’ve just received a message via 3jam, just reply to the text message and your reply will go to the same recipients as the message that you’re replying to.

If you want to start a new conversation from your phone, you can send commands to the 3jam phone number. Check out the phone commands you can use.

Q: Will messages I send from 3jam SuperText look like they come from me?

Messages sent using 3jam SuperText will come from a 3jam number (either a 5 digit shortcode in the US, or a +61 or +44 number outside of the US). However the message will have your full name at the start, and a recipient list at the end, so that the person that you’re sending to knows exactly who the message is from.

Q: Messages to my phone always come from a different number. What’s going on?

To allow you to have multiple conversations going on at once, 3jam SuperText assigns a different phone number to each conversation that you have going on at any point in time. So if you have a conversation with Katie, and a different conversation with John and Andy, the messages from Katie will come from a different phone number than the messages from John and Andy. Depending on which country you’re in, you can have up to 5 or 10 conversations going on at once. Because you can only have a limited number of conversations going on at once, they will time out after 36 hours. You can still respond to these conversations either via the website or using keyword commands on your phone.

Q: I'm seeing "(pending)" after my friend's name in my conversation list.. What does that mean?

If the person that you’re sending a message to has unsubscribed from the service, or if they are a T-Mobile user that hasn't approved messages from us, you will see this message until they allow 3jam messages. Once they do, the message will disappear and they'll receive your message.

Q: What does changing the "Send replies to my phone" option do?

3jam lets you choose whether you want messages sent to your web inbox to also be forwarded to your phone. By setting this option in the upper right hand corner, you have complete control over when messages go to your phone. You have the choice of the following settings:

  • Always - This means that messages will always be sent to your phone, even if you're logged in
  • When I'm Idle (only available to US users) - When you've got this setting selected, 3jam will detect whether you're actively reading your incoming messages. If we detect that you haven't read a particular message, we'll assume that you're no longer in front of your computer, and start sending messages to your phone. You don't ever need to worry about logging out. When you come back to your computer, you can keep messaging from the web as normal.
  • When I'm Offline - When you choose to log off 3jam (or close your browser), we'll start to send messages to your phone. However if you don't log off, messages will go to your web inbox only.
  • Never - We never send messages to your phone, even if you're not online. We let you know when you have a new message by sending you an email to your registered email address. If you're an international user and you have this option selected, it's free to send a message to you.

Q: How does this affect how much it costs to send me a message?

Note: if you’re in the US, it’s always free to send the first 40 messages each month to you.

3jam will only charge people to send a message to you if it’s going to your phone. So if you’ve selected Always, your friends will always have to pay to send to you. If you’ve selected When I’m Offline, your friends will only have to pay to send to you when you’re logged off. If you’re set to Never, then it’s always free to send you a message.

Q: I'm not able to select the Never option - it keeps changing me back to a different setting.

You're not able to choose the Never option until you've verified your email. Please check your email (including your spam folder) for the verification email from 3jam and click on the link. You can now select the Never option. You can also verify your email address by going to the account page.

Q: My email address has changed since I sign up. How do I correct it?

You can change your email address in the account page.

Adding friends

Q: How do I add friends to my contact list?

You can add a friend using the “Add Contact” button on either the New Message or Contacts pages. If you’re not in the US, please use correct international format when adding a friend (including the +, country code, and with no leading 0s on the number).

Q: I have a contact without a mobile number - instead it says “friend auto-added”. What’s going on?

3jam wants to make it easy for you to communicate with people you know. Every time you are in a Reply-All conversation started by a friend, everyone in the conversation who isn’t already in your address book will be added to your address book. This way, you can send a message to anyone you have previously communicated with.

Q: Will people who are automatically added to my contact list be able to get access to my phone number?

No. Only friends who have added you directly using your phone number or whom you have added directly using a phone number will have access to your phone number from the 3jam website.

Q: How do I delete someone from my contact list?

To delete a contact, go to the Contacts page. Click on the contact you want to delete and you will see a button with an x on it. Click that button to delete the contact.

Cost

Q: How much does it cost to use 3jam SuperText?

3jam does not charge to send the first 40 messages per month to US phone numbers. You will not be charged by either 3jam or your carrier. It is also always free to send messages to a non-US user’s web inbox. This means that they’re either online or have set their “Send replies to my phone” setting to Never.

If you have already used your 40 free monthly messages or you send a message to a non-US user, and that user is offline (or has set their “Send replies to my phone” setting to Always), then you will be charged a small amount to cover the cost of sending them the text message. You can find the price to send messages to various countries on our message pricing page. You will be charged this amount regardless of whether you’re sending from your phone (i.e. replying to a message) or the web site.

Please note that any time you send or receive a text message on your phone, standard text messaging charges apply. Check with your wireless carrier if you have questions about standard text messaging charges or your specific text messaging plan.

Attachments

Q: How do I send attachments using 3jam SuperText?

When you are composing a new message or reply, click the paper clip icon to open the attachment form, then click on 'Browse' or 'Select File' to pick the file you want to attach. Once you have selected your file, click the upload button to confirm your attachment. You can then continue to write your message, and when the attachment is finished uploading, just click the 'Send' button like you normally would and your message will be sent with a link to your file.

Q: Is there a file size limit for attachments?

Yes. Currently, you can send attachments of up to 4MB in size.

Q: What file types are supported for attachments?

You may send files that are one of the following types:

  • JPG
  • GIF
  • PNG
  • TIFF
  • MP3
  • MIDI
  • WAV
  • AAC
  • AVI
  • 3GP
  • MPG

International users

Q: Does 3jam support international users?

People on all carriers in 180+ countries in the world can use 3jam. If you’re an international user, please enter your phone number in correct international format (a +, the country code, and then the mobile number with no leading 0). If you’re not sure of your country code, please select your country from the drop down list and it will populate automatically.

Leaving 3jam

Q: I just received a message from a friend who uses 3jam. But I don’t want to use the service; can I opt out of 3jam?

Sure. To opt out, just reply to the message you received and send STOP ALL. Sending this message will stop future 3jam communications to your mobile phone and you will no longer receive 3jam messages from friends. You will also no longer to start 3jams unless you sign up again.

Q: I previously unsubscribed from 3jam using STOP ALL but I would like to use 3jam again. How do I do this?

To start using 3jam SuperText again, either go to the Account page on our website and select the opt-out link.

Or, from your phone, send “signup” followed by your first and last name to 43526 (if you’re in the US), or +447797806160 (if you’re in the UK or anywhere else).

Twitter by 3jam

Q: What is Twitter by 3jam?

Twitter by 3jam delivers your Twitter direct messages to your phone via SMS, wherever you are.

Q: How do I set up Twitter by 3jam?

Go to www.3jam.com/twitter or select Twitter from the left hand menu and enter your Twitter username and password. You can select how often we check Twitter for DMs - remember, you only have 70 Twitter requests per hour (at the moment). This is total across all your Twitter apps, so if you use a client like Twhirl you should set it to poll less frequently. This will mean that you may wait a little longer to get each DM, but will mean you don't run out of requests each hour.

Q: Why do you need my Twitter username and password?

We need your details so we can continually poll the Twitter API and deliver your direct messages to you. We have a very strict privacy policy. You can also delete your details at any time.

Q: How do I remove my Twitter details from my account?

Just click on the "Forget my Twitter details" at the bottom of the Twitter by 3jam page.

Q: How much does it cost to receive a direct messages?

What you pay varies by country - please go to the Twitter by 3jam page to see how much it will cost you. Each message will deduct from your 3jam balance. Once you run out of credit, you'll stop getting messages sent to your phone, so keep checking back to see how much credit you have left.

Q: Can I respond to direct messages?

Yes, you can respond to DMs just as you would using the normal Twitter number. Remember to use the d <username> syntax, or your message will go to your main timeline.

Q: How do I post to Twitter using a local number?

Once you set up Twitter by 3jam, you can post to any of the Twitter by 3jam numbers in Australia, the UK, Sweden, or Germany just as you would post to the normal Twitter number. Normal posts go to your timeline, and d <username> messages are sent as direct messages. The current numbers that we offer are:

Q: Will you notify me if my account has run out of credit?

Unfortunately we haven't built that yet, so please keep checking back at www.3jam.com to see if you have enough credit. If there's enough demand, we'll build in a notification system for you.

Q: Why can't I get my Twitter timeline delivered via SMS too?

We're testing the waters with the DM delivery service. If there's enough demand, we'll build in delivery of @replies and/or Twitter timeline messages. Please ask if you want us to build something!

Q: Why use Twitter by 3jam as opposed to other services out there?

3jam has a long history of reliably delivering SMS around the world, so we really know what we're doing. Plus, we deliver so many messages each month, we can negotiate the best possible rate for you.
